It explores how words, body language and tone of voice combine to create a positive performance. It explains how to rehearse effectively. And it equips students to handle questions with the poise and authority necessary for success.

Once students have completed this programme they will be able to systematically move from a written presentation to persuasive and polished delivery. Specifically, they will be able to:

• Use the 5 P’s: Pace, Pitch, Pause, Pronunciation and Power to improve their vocal delivery and add interest to their voice.
• Use effective story telling techniques to engage their audience and deliver their key messages persuasively including:
  • making it personal;
  • making it relevant;
  • using examples;
  • using word pictures and analogies.
• Look their best in front of an audience by:
  • paying attention to the way they look;
  • analysing and rehearsing how they stand, gesture and move;
  • handling support materials with polish.
• Anticipate and handle the audience’s questions effectively and positively.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

The purpose of this workshop is to help participants feel confident to deliver a presentation professionally and powerfully. The workshop sessions are designed to help participants to develop their presentation delivery skills through constructive peer and trainer feedback, experiment with how they look and how they sound and to increase their confidence.

WORKSHOP SESSIONS

Part 1

What Makes a Presentation Powerful?
This session introduces the workshop day, gives participants the opportunity to get to know each other and explains how the workshop fits in the overall training programme. Participants will use constructive feedback techniques extensively in later practice sessions.

Part 2

Your Performance: Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse!
The rehearsal sessions are a crucial part of the course: in general, people learn most when ‘doing’ and getting feedback. This session is, in a sense, the ‘before’. Participants will deliver a presentation and receive feedback. They have a second opportunity to present once they’ve evaluated the feedback and practised some delivery techniques.

Improving Your Performance: Voice
This session looks more closely at using the voice. Participants will practice using their voices to add emphasis, meaning an interest to their presentation as well as evaluate the effect a voice has on an audience.

Improving Your Performance: Body Language
This session looks more closely at using body language. Participants will practice using a professional and authoritative posture, gestures and movement to add interest to the presentation, and practise using voice, gestures and movement to add meaning to ambiguous words.

Improving Your Performance: Handling Questions
This session looks more closely at handling questions. Participants will practise analysing how to get a question and answer session started, recap the principles of handling questions and practise asking and responding to difficult questions in a role play.

Improving Your Performance: Speak with Confidence
This session looks more closely at speaking with confidence. Participants will explore how to manage their nerves and experience and handle being asked to speak in front of an audience at short notice.

Closing Session
This session closes the workshop and provides the launch pad for the transfer of learning back into the workplace.
