Q: How much bandwidth do I need to run a Balance Learning online course?
Bandwidth per user for a course which includes audio and video is between 96K and 160K bits per second peak rate depending on required video quality (the average is lower). For a non-audio course the bandwidth is below 56K bits per second.
Q: Are the Balance Learning courses SCORM compliant?
Yes, the Balance Learning courses conform to the SCORM 1.2 runtime environment and conform to the AICC standards.Q: What browsers are supported by the Balance Learning product and what additional software/plug-ins are needed to enable full functionaility?
Microsoft® Internet Explorer v5.5 or higher.Netscape® Navigator 4.77 or higher (exc. 6.0 & 6.1).
Macromedia FlashT Player version 6.0 or higher.
Q: What is the expected resource use on our servers?
Storage requirement on server for an audio and video based course is between 40 and 80 megabytes per hour of courseware depending on the amount of video. Non-audio courses require 5 to 15 megabytes per hour.
Q: What specification should the user PC have in order to run the courses effectively?
- 400MHz Pentium processor pc or Apple Mac
- 64MB free available system RAM
- 800*600 Screen resolution or greater, 16 bit colour depth (24 bit recommended)
- Sound Card with speakers or headphones (Text versions do not require this)
- Windows® 98SE, ME, NT4 (SP 6), 2000, XP Home, XP Professional, Mac® OS X or higher
- OR Windows XP within Citrix thin client environment (provided Macro FlashT Player version 6.0 or higher is installed)
Q: Do the Balance Courses use any of the following technologies: QuickTime, Windows Media Player or RealPlayer?
No. The Balance Learning courses do not use any of these technologies. The only additional plug-in required to play the courses is Macromedia FlashT Player.Q: How do I play the DVDs on a PC/Mac?
Firstly ensure that your system matches the minimum requirements:
- DVD-Rom Drive ; and
- DVD Software e.g. InterVideo WinDVD, Cyberlink PowerDVD, or Windows Media Player 8 or above + DVD Decoder; and
- Sound Card
2. You will need to navigate to the DVD-Rom Drive using the PC's 'My Computer' window in order to manually launch the DVD; or
3. Some PCs will require the DVD software to be open before manually launching the DVD from the 'My Computer' window.
Use the mouse or the computer keyboard to navigate around the course and to answer the questions. You can also use the software's play, pause, forward, rewind functions to navigate through the course.
Q: How do I play the DVDs on a DVD Player?
1. Place the DVD into the DVD Player.2. Ensure the television is set to the DVD channel.
3. The DVD will automatically begin to play.
4. Use the DVD player's remote control to navigate around the course, answer questions and control the DVD as you would any normal DVD film.
Q: The DVD sometimes jumps. What can I do to stop this happening?
This is a common problem that occurs when there is dust or dirt on the disc. Please wipe the disc with a soft clean cloth to resolve the issue.
Q: I am trying to demo your courses but am experiencing problems with the course launching. What is the solution?
The most common problem will be that pop-up blocker is enabled on your PC. You will need to allow pop-ups from www.balancelearning.co.uk in your chosen pop-up blocking sofware.
NB. The below instructions are just guidelines for how you can disable the pop-up blocker for our website. They may alter slightly depending on your operating system.

To temporarily allow pop-ups hold down the Ctrl key whilst clicking on the link.
To permanently allow pop-ups from a site: On the menu, go to: Tools > Pop-up
Blocker > Pop-up Blocker Settings...
In the panel that opens, type www.balancelearning.co.uk in the site exceptions
box and click Add.
Alternatively, go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy Tab. If the Block pop-ups box is ticked, click on Settings and add www.balancelearning.co.uk in the Address of website to allow box.
Open the Tools menu and click on Options:
Click on the Web Features/Content icon.
Remove the checkmark beside the Block Pop-up windows option.
Click Ok to close the window.
To re-enable pop-up blocking, check the Block Pop-up windows option.
Alternatively, keep the pop-up windows box checked and click exceptions next to Block popup windows. Specify the address you would like to allow by typing www.balancelearning.co.uk in the top bar and then click allow. Click close and then ok to close the window.
From the Edit menu, select the Preferences option. The following window will
appear:
Click on the arrow beside the Privacy & Security option on the left-hand
side of the window to make it display the options shown above.
Click on the Pop-up Windows option.
Remove the checkmark from beside the Block Unrequested Pop-up Windows option.
Click Ok to close the Window.
To re-enable pop-up blocking, check the Block Unrequested Pop-Up Winodws option.
Alternatively, in the popup windows menu, click on Allowed Sites and type www.balancelearning.co.uk to add our site to your allowed sites list.
